Qualifié de 8ème merveille du monde, ce temple est emprunt de magie. Le summum est d'assister au levé (sunrise) et/ou au couché de soleil (sunset). Le Bayon en constitué de 37 tours (à l'origine 54) à l'effigie du Roi et dont chacune arbore une face de chaque côté des points cardinaux ! Ce qui faisait 216 faces représentant le Roi avec un sourire énigmatique et rassurant pour ses disciples.

On peut y découvrir le Baphuon, temple montagne où au XIVème siècle les hindous ont édifié un Bouddha allongé d'environ 30 mètres de haut, avec les pierres écroulées des coursives du temple. Ce temple a été reconstruit grâce à Monsieur Pascal ROYERE (1965-2014) qui y a consacré 18 ans de sa vie.
Vous pourrez y visiter aussi le Phimeanakas qui une fois escaladé offre aussi une vue imprenable sur la cité.

Ta keo, l'inachevé, permet de comprendre la façon dont étaient édifiés les temples ainsi que l'ordre dans lequel étaient réalisés les travaux. Il aurait normalement dû être encore plus majestueux et plus grand qu'Angkor Wat ! C'est dire.
L'arrêt de sa construction serait due à une de ces 3 causes possibles : la pierre trop dure à tailler (granit) aurait rendu impossible de réaliser l'ensemble des scultures prévues. Le temple aurait été frappé par la foudre, ce qui était un mauvais présage. Et enfin, troisième hypothèse : le coût trop élevé des travaux et des finances au plus mal.

Preah Ko pour Boeufs Sacrés s'étant sur une grande surface où seuls sont encore présents 6 Prasat, 3 pour le Roi, 3 pour la Reine. A l'extérieur, vous pourrez visiter une fabrique de soie ainsi qu'admirer le travail d'un sculteur.
Comme Angkor Wat, Bakong est entouré d'eau, ce qui l'a préservé des ravages de la jungle. Il est le premier temple montagne d'Angkor, et a été construit avec des pierres beaucoup plus grandes que ses prédécesseurs.
